What is an English Mastiff?

There are several variations of Mastiff that exist but the English Mastiff is the largest in size as determined by weight and height factors. The history of the mastiff dates back over 4500 years. The mastiff of that time was much leaner and taller but overall was similar to the mastiffs of today. They were used in battles of war and for guarding many important people because of their massive size and strength allowing them to carry out tasks that no other canine could accomplish. Mastiffs are appreciated for their giant size combined with their gentle ways, which is why the term “gentle giant” was coined in reference to mastiffs. An old saying goes, “What the lion is to the cat, the mastiff is to the dog.” When looking at English Mastiff for a pet or for show, the following descriptions may help in making your decision. As pets: simply - amazing, loving, caring, sharing and best friend. They are a wonderful breed all around, at home, with kids or other pets and as a work or play companion. They love car rides and are very quite, not harassing outsiders. They will make any car appear big, as they seem to fit into any size or shape as long as you take them with you on a ride. They love a smile and big kisses. They love a comfy couch or they make due with the floor as long as you are near. They cannot wait for an invite to bed and if they are accustomed to the outdoors, they make excellent protectors while you are sleeping. One bark from them and all noises around disappear. They are the best home protection plan you can get! If inside pets, be prepared to notice you give up your seat for your mastiff, they will stare at you until you feel guilty enough to give it up. At dinnertime they remind you like a loud alarm clock (at least Delilah does, BARK!!) The experience when taking them anywhere public is special and fun, almost everyone asks what they are. We have yet to meet a person that comes through the door and doesn’t fall in love with our mastiffs. In breeding mastiffs, our females have shown to be very nurturing to their pups while maintaining constant love for us. Our male, Goliath continues his puppy nature and has such fun with his pups. All our Mastiffs are one big happy family. In showing, they are as beautiful in the ring as at home while they prove their qualities at this event. We look forward to our future and anticipate good things to come with our Mastiffs in the show ring. If you are planning to show your mastiff it is good to learn about the event and what your mastiff needs in order to be successful. It is important to start your puppy early with obedience classes and good home training to gear you mastiff for what they will need. See you at the shows!
